Selected exam questions & worked solutions
These selected examples are separate from the original practice below. Each identifies its exam, year and wording. They do not represent every paper or every selected year.
No source-verified exam questions have been published for this lesson yet. The worked examples and practice below are original teaching material, not past-exam questions.

1. A mixed option is a bundle of separate biological claims
The analytics label Equal-weight Cross-chapter Options identifies a question format, not a biological chapter or a claim that every curriculum unit has equal examination weight. This lesson teaches the format through concrete connections among cell division, bioenergetics, plant transport, immunity and ecology.
An option such as meiosis I—homologue separation; xylem—water transport; plasma cell—antibody secretion combines three propositions. Each needs its own justification. Recognising two familiar pairs does not make the third correct, and a correct topic word cannot repair a wrong relationship.
A reliable evaluation names the object, process and condition in each clause. For example, replicated chromosome and two chromosomes are not synonyms before sister separation. Similarly, a plant tissue can transport material without every cell in that tissue having the same structure.
The aim is not a guessing trick. It is to make the biological reasoning explicit enough that a changed qualifier, denominator or compartment can be detected. All questions here are original educational examples, not reconstructions of official examination items.

2. Matching requires a discriminating property, not loose association
Consider four items: ATP synthase, DNA ligase, a plasma cell and a decomposer. Suitable descriptions are coupling proton flow to ATP formation, joining appropriate DNA ends through backbone bonds, secreting antibodies and obtaining resources while contributing to breakdown of organic remains. Each match uses the defining action, not merely a shared chapter.
ATP synthase and DNA ligase can both be connected with ATP in broader biochemical contexts, but that does not make their functions interchangeable. A distractor based on energy use is weaker than the specific reaction requested. Similarly, an immune cell and an antigen are associated without being the same type of entity.
Before imposing a one-to-one match, read whether the question actually requires it. Some formats allow one description to match more than one item. In a clearly stated one-to-one exercise, use a complete set of justified matches; do not force the final pair solely because it is left over.
A mixed matching task is therefore an exercise in biological classification. The decisive property may be a substrate, product, direction of transport, cell type or ecological effect. Identifying that property makes the match robust even when the order of items changes.

3. Evaluate the full statement, including its quantifier and scope
A statement can contain a correct core and an incorrect universal word. Plant cells can perform mitochondrial respiration is true, while all plant cells contain chloroplasts is false. Many nonphotosynthetic plant cells lack chloroplasts. The word all changes the claim being tested.
Another example is DNA replication doubles chromosome number. Replication doubles DNA content in the standard cell-cycle model, but before sister separation the chromosome count remains unchanged. The statement substitutes one counted object for another.
For a pair of statements, decide the truth of each separately before selecting a combined answer. If the format additionally asks whether one explains the other, truth alone is insufficient: a causal link must be established. Two true facts from different chapters need not stand in an explanatory relationship.
Conditions are part of the biology. A logistic population model with r > 0 and K > 0 has negative growth above K, but the conclusion is not a property of every possible population equation. A statement should retain the assumptions that make its conclusion valid.

4. Compare chemiosmosis by identifying both sides of the membrane
In an actively photosynthesising chloroplast, the thylakoid membrane separates the lumen from the stroma. The light-dependent processes establish a proton electrochemical gradient, and proton flow through ATP synthase toward the stroma can support ATP formation on that side.
In the standard respiring mitochondrion, the inner membrane separates matrix from intermembrane space. Electron transport supports proton movement from matrix toward intermembrane space, while return through ATP synthase toward the matrix can support ATP formation.
The shared principle is coupling downhill proton electrochemical movement to ATP synthesis. The named compartments differ. Matching chloroplast lumen to mitochondrial matrix merely because both sound internal would reverse the functional comparison.
An electrochemical gradient includes electrical and concentration contributions. Saying protons always move from higher concentration to lower concentration is incomplete for charged particles when electrical potential matters. The selected diagrams show the usual operating directions, not every possible reversal of ATP synthase.

Functional orientation chosen for comparison, not organelle anatomy. Blue arrows summarise gradient establishment and do not claim a single identical pump in both organelles. Photosynthetic proton accumulation also includes water-splitting chemistry. Orange arrows show selected ATP-synthesising modes, not every possible reversal.

5. Similar molecules can occupy different positions in different pathways
In oxygenic photosynthesis, the released oxygen is associated with splitting water at photosystem II. Carbon dioxide supplies carbon for carbohydrate formation through carbon-fixation processes. Swapping the origins of oxygen gas and fixed carbon is a common mixed-statement error.
In aerobic mitochondrial respiration, oxygen serves as the terminal electron acceptor in the respiratory chain and is reduced to water. Carbon dioxide is released in decarboxylation reactions associated with oxidation of carbon substrates, not directly by every ATP-producing step.
Plants can carry out both photosynthesis and respiration. A photosynthetic cell does not stop needing respiratory and other metabolic functions simply because it contains a chloroplast. Conversely, roots can respire without performing the same light-dependent reactions as a leaf chloroplast.
At the ecosystem level, energy enters biological pathways and is progressively dispersed as heat, while chemical elements can move through cycles. The fact that ATP is regenerated inside cells does not mean an ecosystem recycles usable energy indefinitely without an external input.

6. Count the object and name the stage before comparing numbers
Use a model organism with 2n = 6. A typical diploid G₁ nucleus contains six chromosomes and 2C DNA. After S phase it still has six chromosomes, each with two sister chromatids, and 4C DNA. Twelve chromatids are not twelve chromosomes at that stage.
After meiosis I and cytokinesis, each product has three chromosomes, each still duplicated, and 2C DNA. After meiosis II and cytokinesis, each product has three unduplicated chromosomes and 1C DNA. The transition in ploidy and the transition in DNA content are related but distinct.
A mitotic anaphase question can count the entire undivided cell or one future daughter set. Once sisters separate, each is counted as a chromosome, so the denominator matters. A numerical answer without a named compartment or cell boundary can be ambiguous.
Plant reproduction adds a life-cycle distinction: haploid gametophytes can produce gametes by mitosis, whereas meiosis in the diploid sporophyte produces spores in the standard alternation-of-generations model. The animal shortcut meiosis makes gametes should not be imposed on every plant stage.
Full-size scientific diagram. Swipe or scroll horizontally; keyboard users can focus the diagram and use arrow keys.
Normal division and completed cytokinesis are assumed. The diagrams count one nucleus or product, not every product pooled together. Colours distinguish illustrative chromosome copies and are not a complete recombination or inheritance map. A duplicated chromosome remains one chromosome before its sisters separate.

7. Identify the transported material and the driving relationship
Xylem conducts water and dissolved mineral nutrients through connected conducting elements. Mature vessel elements and tracheids are dead at functional maturity, but xylem tissue also includes living parenchyma. Thus xylem contains dead conducting cells is different from every xylem cell is dead.
Phloem transports organic solutes between sources and sinks. In flowering plants, sieve-tube elements are living but lack a nucleus at maturity and depend on associated companion cells. This combination is a useful counterexample to the claim that every living plant cell has a nucleus.
A source exports assimilates and a sink imports them in the stated context. A developing storage organ can be a sink and later become a source when stored reserves are mobilised. Phloem transport is therefore not adequately described by an unconditional downward arrow.
Water movement also requires a potential framework. In a simple osmosis comparison at equal temperature and initial hydrostatic pressure, a membrane permeable to water but not the selected solute permits initial net water movement toward the side with lower water potential. Permeability and pressure assumptions should not be omitted.

8. Separate copying, expression, joining and recognition
DNA polymerase extends a DNA strand using a template; RNA polymerase produces RNA from a DNA template during transcription; and ribosomes translate an mRNA sequence into a polypeptide. These processes involve different products even though all are connected with genetic information.
DNA ligase joins suitable DNA ends by forming phosphodiester bonds in the backbone. Complementary bases can pair through hydrogen bonding, but pairing and covalent joining are not the same event. An option assigning peptide-bond formation to ligase confuses nucleic-acid repair with protein synthesis.
A restriction endonuclease cuts DNA internally at sites determined by its recognition properties. It does not necessarily produce sticky ends in every case. A primer provides a starting end for DNA polymerase; it is not an enzyme that seals a nick.
The same discipline applies to biotechnology outputs. PCR amplification, gel separation and probe hybridisation answer different questions. More copies, a size-related migration pattern and complementary binding are distinct observations, so one cannot substitute for another without further evidence.

9. Match the cell, molecule and type of protection separately
Plasma cells are differentiated B-lineage cells that secrete antibodies. Antibodies are proteins that recognise corresponding antigenic features. An antigen is the recognised target, not another name for the antibody-producing cell.
Active immunity involves the recipient’s own adaptive response. Passive immunity transfers preformed protective components, such as antibodies. Passive antibody transfer does not by itself establish the same recipient-generated memory response as active immunisation.
Memory cells can support a faster or stronger response on later exposure to the relevant antigen, but every later immune response is not identical and protection is not automatically lifelong. A statement about memory should identify the relevant adaptive system and avoid universal guarantees.
Immune protection also illustrates the difference between presence and function. Detecting an antibody can provide information about a response, while the amount, specificity and context determine what further conclusions are justified. No individual diagnosis or vaccine decision follows from these introductory classification exercises.

10. Define the comparison and denominator in ecological claims
Interaction signs describe effects on the participating populations under a stated comparison. Mutualism is represented by +/+, competition by −/−, predation by +/− and commensalism by +/0 in the simplified framework. Zero means no measured effect in the model, not proof that an organism does nothing physically.
Net primary productivity is gross primary productivity minus producer respiration for a defined area and time. It is not gross productivity minus all ecosystem respiration. Subtracting consumer and decomposer respiration belongs to a different ecosystem-level accounting question.
For fictional GPP of 1,000 energy units per area per year and producer respiration of 400 in the same units, NPP is 600. If herbivore production is 60, its ratio to NPP is 10%, but its ratio to GPP is 6%. Both calculations are correct when named; only one answers a given efficiency definition.
Energy-transfer efficiency is not a universal constant that every real food chain must follow exactly. A stated 10% model supports a calculation, while a measured system requires its own data. Matter cycling and energy transfer should also remain distinct in mixed statements.
11 / UNDERSTAND & APPLY
11. Test whether the proposed reason actually explains the assertion
Assertion: an enzyme can accelerate a reaction. Reason: it lowers the activation barrier along an available reaction pathway. In a suitable catalytic context, the reason explains the assertion. It does not imply that the enzyme changes the reaction’s equilibrium constant.
Contrast this with assertion: a replicated diploid nucleus has more DNA than before S phase. Reason: meiosis I separates homologous chromosomes. Both statements can be true in their proper contexts, but the second does not explain DNA replication during S phase.
A counterexample is decisive against a universal claim when it satisfies the stated scope. A mature sieve-tube element challenges every living plant cell has a nucleus; a root cell without chloroplasts challenges every plant cell photosynthesises. The counterexample must be biologically relevant, not merely an unusual word association.
For a conjunction joined by and, each component must be correct. For a statement joined by because, the causal connection must also be correct. This is why mixed-topic evaluation requires both factual knowledge and attention to the logical structure of the sentence.

The examples explicitly include matching, whole-option selection, statement evaluation and causal explanation.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
A complete cross-chapter matching set
Match A: ATP synthase; B: plasma cell; C: DNA ligase; D: decomposer to 1: antibody secretion; 2: backbone joining; 3: proton-gradient coupling; 4: organic-remain breakdown. Each number is used once.
ATP synthase couples proton flow to ATP synthesis in the stated operating mode: A–3.
Plasma cells secrete antibodies: B–1. DNA ligase joins DNA backbone ends: C–2.
Decomposers contribute to breakdown of organic remains: D–4.
Answer A–3, B–1, C–2, D–4.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Choose the wholly correct option
Which option is wholly correct? A: meiosis I separates sisters; xylem conducts water. B: meiosis I separates homologues; plasma cells secrete antibodies. C: phloem always moves downward; ligase makes peptide bonds.
A has a correct xylem clause but an incorrect meiosis clause.
B contains two correct relationships.
C contains two incorrect relationships: phloem follows source–sink relations and ligase joins DNA backbone ends.
Answer B.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Evaluate paired statements
I: after S phase, a model 2n = 6 nucleus has six chromosomes and twelve chromatids. II: after meiosis I and cytokinesis, each product has three duplicated chromosomes. Assume normal division.
S phase duplicates DNA without separating sister centromeres.
Meiosis I separates homologues while sisters remain together.
Both counts refer to the specified nucleus or product.
Answer Both I and II are true.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Compare proton-return compartments
For the usual ATP-synthesising modes, identify the proton-return destination in a chloroplast and a mitochondrion.
Chloroplast return is from thylakoid lumen toward stroma.
Mitochondrial return is from intermembrane space toward matrix.
The shared mechanism does not make the compartment names interchangeable.
Answer Stroma in the chloroplast; matrix in the mitochondrion.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Use the correct productivity denominator
GPP is 1,000 and producer respiration is 400; herbivore production is 60, all in compatible area-time energy units. Find NPP and herbivore production/NPP.
NPP = 1,000 − 400 = 600.
The requested ratio uses NPP, not GPP.
60/600 × 100 = 10%.
Answer NPP = 600; requested ratio = 10%.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Separate truth from explanation
Assertion: S phase increases DNA content. Reason: plasma cells secrete antibodies. Are both true, and does the reason explain the assertion?
DNA replication during S phase increases DNA content in the standard model.
Plasma-cell antibody secretion is also true.
The immune-cell fact does not explain DNA replication.
Answer Both are true; the reason does not explain the assertion.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Find a relevant counterexample
A statement says every cell in xylem tissue is dead. Which observation challenges it: living xylem parenchyma or dead vessel elements?
The universal claim concerns every cell in the tissue.
A living xylem parenchyma cell falls within that scope.
Dead vessel elements agree with only part of the tissue description.
Answer Living xylem parenchyma is the counterexample.
ORIGINAL WORKED EXAMPLE
Keep pressure and permeability in the model
Two solutions at equal temperature and equal initial hydrostatic pressure are separated by a membrane permeable only to water. The right side has lower water potential. What is the initial net direction?
The membrane permits water but not the stated solute.
The given water-potential difference determines the initial net direction.
Later pressure changes can alter the net movement.
Answer Initially, water moves from left to right.
